CIRCULAR DESIGN AND RECYCLED MATERIALS

Protecting natural resources and reducing our environmental footprint is important to hummel.

We believe in the concept of a circular economy within fashion — using and reusing the same materials and fibres again and again, without losing their value.

To create a more sustainable fashion industry, we must work towards reusing and recycling textile fibres on a much larger scale than we do today. With this in mind, we began our transition to recycled fibres some years ago, such as recycled polyester, recycled polyamide, and recycled cotton. Instead of continuously producing new fibres from raw materials, we need to increasingly reuse fibres from existing products.

Our goal is, in collaboration with our suppliers, to produce new products from post-consumer textiles. To achieve this, it is necessary to rethink our entire design process and ensure from the very beginning that our products are recyclable at the end of their lifecycle. This includes our material choices and how easily products can be disassembled. As part of this effort, we participate in industry-wide projects exploring how fibres from used textiles can be recycled into new materials.

We believe that scientific progress and increased availability of truly circular fibres, such as recycled cotton and recycled polyester made from used garments, will help us achieve this goal.
